Central and Eastern Eurobarometer

Monitoring economic and political transition in Eastern Europe

After the fall of the "iron curtain", between 1990 and 1997, this survey programme, conducted on the behalf of the European Commision, has been monitoring economic and political changes, as well as attitudes towards Europe and the European Union in Central and Eastern Europe.

For this purpose, representative national samples have annually been drawn in up to 20 countries of the region, covering future applicant or candidate countries and selected former Soviet Republics (CIS). Respondents were interviewed face-to-face in the respective national language.

The main CEEB results are published in official survey reports.

The archive data service products

The data received from the principal investigator are checked and formatted in accordance with archival standards. The single country data sets of the first four waves have been processed and integrated by the GESIS Data Archive, kindly supported by the former Center for European Surveys and Studies (ZEUS), University of Mannheim.

  • They are comprehensively documented on study and variable level and completely published for online access via the GESIS search and for data download via Data Catalogue download.
  • The cumulative trend file "Central and Eastern Eurobarometer 1990-1997: Trends CEEB 1-8" integrates the complete set of trend variables across space and time.
  • Each dataset (version) is persistently identified and registered with a unique digital object identifier (doi). The corresponding URL (http://dx.doi.org/10.4232/1.nnnnn) will always lead you to the dataset location in the GESIS data catalogue.
  • Please see here for the general data access regulations at GESIS.
