This FAQ is compiled in order to provide guidance with regard to several recurring questions concerning the Eurobarometer surveys and the Eurobarometer website at GESIS. If your question is not answered here, please contact us via eurobarometer-dataservice(at)gesis(dot)org
All Eurobarometer surveys are available through the GESIS Data Catalogue after a free-of-charge registration has been completed. For details on the access to Eurobarometer micro data please go here.
Please go here for links to the study profiles for all Standard and Special Eurobarometers and go here for an overview over all Flash Eurobarometers sorted by topic. Alternatively, you may use the GESIS search for direct access to the files.
There is no definite time schedule for the delivery of Eurobarometer micro data to GESIS and for their release to the public. Usually this is the case about 6 to 12 months after fieldwork. New archive Eurobarometer data releases or updates are regularly announced through the Eurobarometer mailing list.
For overviews of the topics of the Standard and Special Eurobarometer Survey please refer to this link. Alternatively, you may consult this Excel file which links the Eurobarometer report titles with the corresponding surveys and data catalogue entries. For the Flash Eurobarometers please go here, and for the other survey series please consult the respective microsite areas available through the top menu.
The Eurobarometer variables currently can be searched only via the GESIS search for variables. Please note that the search for specific variable contents is limited to the variable and value labels in the case of the Standard & Special Eurobarometer pre‐releases and the Flash Eurobarometers, since the data catalogue does not (yet) include the full question and answer texts for these. An overview of many repeated measures arranged by topics can be found here.
GESIS is not directly involved in the planning and fieldwork of the Eurobarometer surveys. Therefore, we do not have any information about upcoming Eurobarometer waves or the internal planning regarding future surveys. The most recently fielded surveys can always be found at the Eurobarometer site of the European Commission and the European Parliament.
Several cumulative trend files available through GESIS can be found here under "Cumulative trend files". Please note that most of these were generated externally. Unfortunately, more recent trend files than those listed are not available at present.
The Eurobarometer is a series of cross-sectional surveys. For each round a completely new and independent sample is drawn. As a consequence, panel analyses in the strict sense are possible only for aggregated data. An overview of selected trends questions can be found here.
- Variable reports (=codebooks, not available for pre-releases) with frequency counts by country (sample) for each survey are available on the respective study profile pages
- Reports of the European Commission
- The EC Open Data Portal provides access to Excel files containing results differentiated by country and sociodemographic variables
- The EC Eurobarometer portal provides results for selected trends over time and across countries
Please consult the Eurobarometer bibliography.
New archive Eurobarometer data releases or updates are regularly announced through the Eurobarometer mailing list.
Such additional measures cannot be made available, either because they do not actually exist, or because we have not received them, or because we are unable to distribute them due to anonymity considerations. As a general rule, all publishable survey responses are already included in the available datasets, and there is no further data that could be provided via a privileged "secure access" option.
Please consult this Excel file (278 kB) for the Standard and Special Eurobarometers. For this and the other Eurobarometer surveys, the data catalogue also contains information on the geographical coverage.
Please consult the pages of the Research Data Center (RDC) International Survey Programs and the GESIS data catalogue for further surveys available at GESIS.
